The Careful And Deliberative Path To Karate Kata Training

by Gregory Kuhn

Kata training, the practice of performing pre-arranged forms, remains a core component of traditional karate training. Whether the forms are learned and for moving meditation, performance art, or unlocking the secret combative meanings behind the moves, forms must be executed with clear, detailed precision. If not, then the value intended to be derived from forms practice is lost. Sloppy, imprecise movements undermine the value and purpose of the kata. Also, moving up to the next belt ranking requires a display of exceptional skill in a kata demonstration. To improve the learning process, making a few modifications to the way forms are practiced is suggested.

Focus on Good Mechanics

Truly breathtaking kata displays are renowned for the karate expert's ability to execute the moves with speed and power. Below the surface of lightening quick and hard punches are the proper mechanics that make power and speed possible. Without good mechanics, attempts at fast and impressive movements falter. Punches and kicks frequently appear sloppy when lacking mechanical soundness. Look closely at the mechanics of a movement. Does a punch follow a 45 degree angle from the starting point to the full extension of the fist? Does the punch twist or snap at the wrist at the completion of the move? Mimicking the correct mechanics of each and every movement of a kata is the true secret to delivering the best performance.

Practice Smaller Sections

Rather than practice the kata from beginning to end, take small sections of the kata and work on those movements repeatedly. Focusing on the first third of form leads to better proficiency and execution with the section. Move onto the second and final third of the form in time. For those who are still struggling, the form can be broken down further. Simply taking one or two movements from the form and practicing them over and over is a help.

Move Slowly and Deliberately

A careful and slow approach during practice helps with ensuring the small details of proper mechanics are not missed. Through performing the movements slowly and correctly, the body's muscle memory will repeat the same precision when the movements are done faster. Increasing the speed of the movements ever so slightly over time further increases the likelihood precision is not lost when the movement is done with full power.

Obviously, this approach to training requires patience and dedication. Serious practitioners of karate should embrace this approach to training since it does lead down the path of perfection.
