Kata training, the practice of performing pre-arranged forms, remains a core component of traditional karate training. Whether the forms are learned and for moving meditation, performance art, or unlocking the secret combative meanings behind the moves, forms must be executed with clear, detailed precision. If not, then the value intended to be derived from forms practice is lost. Sloppy, imprecise movements undermine the value and purpose of the kata. Also, moving up to the next belt ranking requires a display of exceptional skill in a kata demonstration.
